What is an Expansion Card?
Expansion card definition
Definition: An Expansion Card is a type of card or adapter that is meant to increase the computer's capability and to increase the computer's compatibility. That's why we use expansion cards. These are considered to be quite useful to increase the capacity of the system.
These days, there are also easily removed ones, which we can remove and install whenever we want in the port and some cards also come in the motherboard. Many types of cards are used in computer systems. Let us know in detail about some of those cards.
Types of the expansion card
• Network card - A network card is a computer system used to connect computer networks to the Internet, and also to communication between computers. The network card is also called the Network Adapter and Network Interface Card (NIC).
The NIC card has a pin at the bottom so that it can be placed in the expansion slot which is in the motherboard. In this, there is a port named RJ-45 on the backside, in that we can easily connect it to the LAN network. There are also two types of NIC cards, one for the wired network and one for the wireless network. The wired network card had a port at the back while the card without the wire has an antenna.
• Video card - This card serves to show graphical interface such as images, videos, etc. in the system. It works by converting instructions into graphics with the help of more processing. We also call it a graphic card and a display card.
The video card has its own separate processor which is a means of displaying the operating system and display on the monitor. It is attached to the motherboard with the help of pins downwards and it also has a variety of different ports that connect a variety of output devices such as monitors, projectors, etc. They are connected to large data slots such as PCI slots and AGP slots. Both these slots are in the motherboard itself and are connected to these slots.
• Modem - Modem is similar to network card but it is made up of old technology. It uses a telephone line to connect the computer system to the Internet. For the RJ-11 connector, it mostly consists of two ports.
The first port is used to connect the system to the telephone line and the second one is used to connect the telephone line. It works by converting the digital signal of the telephone line of its system to an analog signal.
• Audio card - Audio card works by converting an electrical signals into the audio signals for sound so that we can hear that sound. Audio cards have a variety of ports and jacks connected to which we can connect the headphone, microphone, speakers and other digital audio devices.
Expansion slots in the motherboard
The motherboard has a lot of expansion slots which are very useful in increasing the capacity of the system. Slots are very helpful in connection with the system.
There are many types of slots, one of which is PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) which is a common expansion slot. This expansion slot was quite useful in the old times. The new expansion slot which is PCI-E (PCI Express) is useful in a wide range of path systems.
PCI-E slots have a wide range of slots such as x1, x4, x8, x16, etc. which are useful in telling how many Pathways and LANs are used in our connections and communication.
The PCIe x1 slot gives us a small data path and is quite used in cards like NICs. PCI-E x16 gives us a long data path and is very useful for video cards etc.
